Why I Went Greek {Sakura}

This week we wanted to highlight each of our individual stories on why we went Greek in lieu of many of you going through recruitment right now. First up, Sakura!

6 years ago, I made the best life-changing decision I have ever made and yup, you guessed it… I went Greek.  To be honest, Greek life was a complete mystery to me.  None of my family members were ever apart of Greek life and my hometown college, University of Nevada-Reno, wasn’t very big in Greek life at the time- so I really had no idea what it was all about.  I knew that Greek life can be negatively stereotyped at times, but I knew that there was so much more to it and I had to find out for myself.

I grew up in a small town in Northern Nevada where everyone knows everyone, so when I decided to go to Arizona State University, I knew that everything was about to change.  As I made my move to Arizona knowing no one, I was a little nervous as to how I would make these next four years in Arizona my new “home”.  I was an out-of-state student with a random roommate in an apartment, because I was not “comfortable” living in the dorms (huge mistake).  All I can say is that I was eager to find new friends and fill that hole in my heart of not being with my family and my childhood friends.

I remember the first week of my freshman year like it was yesterday- getting lost on campus, walking from class to class by myself, and eating alone at the Memorial Union.  It was awful, but little did I know that it was all a blessing in disguise.  During my first “miserable” week, I had my first encounter with what being in a sorority was all about.  The first week of school at Arizona State University is promo week for Greek life and all the sorority women are wearing matching outfits with their letters on it.  I easily recognized which girls were apart of Greek life and saw these sorority women walking from class to class together, eating lunch, and hanging out between classes.   It was everything I wanted.  I registered for recruitment that day and was looking forward to that following weekend for recruitment to start.

Looking back, recruitment was sort of a blur- it was a whirlwind to say the least.  I remember being torn by two sororities, but I thought long-term.  I loved the women in both of these sororities, but one of them seemed like the typical “fun” sorority, while the other seemed a little more… me.   I really wasn’t sure what I was supposed to do- do I go outside of my comfort zone or do I stay in my comfort zone?

I asked myself…

Which group of women could I rely on when something bad happens?
Who will be there for me?
Who will I feel more comfortable with?

Those three questions lead me to my new home, my new friends, and my new family.  I joined the sorority that was for me and nothing else. It has been 6 years since I became a part of Greek life and I wouldn’t be where I am today without it.  I have met the smartest, most hardworking women and they have inspired me in so many different ways.  Without being apart of a sorority, I never would have met my sisters and now business partners to start The Sorority Secrets either.

The only thing I can advise to those going through recruitment is choose the house for you- not because you’re a legacy, your friends’ decision, or the reputation of the house.  Do it for you and everything else will fall into place!

xoxo,
Sakura

TSS Favorite Things {July}

Sakura- Hat | Lipstick | Flats

July has been a wonderful month for us and we've had so much going on!  We're currently working on some fun & exciting stuff for TSS on the back-end that we can't wait to share!  Still in this crazy month of July, we still found time to go shopping and give you our must-haves of July!

Sakura was determined to find a new lip color and found Twig by MAC!  It's a great color and goes wonderfully with MAC's lipliner called Whirl.  It has that perfect "Kylie Jenner" matte look and it's definitely a must-have color.  Ali is Miss Fashionista and you can never go wrong with black wedges!  These Halogen wedges goes perfectly with everything and you can dress it up or down!  Karen's been committed to eating healthy and let's just say, she's doing a fabulous job!  Getting a juicer can be a bit pricey, but with a great juicer like Breville, it's worth every penny!

We hope everyone had a wonderful month!

Lucky FABB with {The Stylist LA}

We just can't get enough of The Stylist LA!  As you have seen Ali and Karen in The Stylist LA's amazing dresses, Sakura also was able to grab a couple dresses and even visit the showroom in LA!  Sakura recently had the opportunity to attend the Lucky Magazine's Fashion and Beauty Blogger Conference in West Hollywood and she made sure to make a stop at The Stylist LA's showroom to grab a few outfits!

Before we get into the details of Sakura's outfits, can we talk about how cute their showroom is?  They have everything from Nightcap Clothing, Naven, to our one of our favorite brand, Parker!

If this is your first time hearing about The Stylist LA- this is how it works:

1.  Visit www.TheStylistLA.com or make an appointment to visit the showroom in Venice, Los Angeles.  E-mail: info@thestylistla.com | Phone: (310) 331-8539

2. Rent the dress for 5 days for a fraction of the retail price

3. Just slip in the mail after you're done with the event!

The best part about it is that shipping is all included in the pricing!

Now, let's get into Sakura's outfits for the Lucky FABB event!  On the first day, she wore the Parker Clarence Dress, which was the perfect sophisticated-but-cute dress for the conference!  She then attended the Saturday brunch with her fellow blogger friend, Ashley from Golden Divine, wearing the Nightcap Belize Fit & Flare Dress in White and ended the weekend with the perfect girls night out dress wearing the Parker Hayden dress!

They always have new inventory and you don't even have to dry clean it! They just think of everything!

A special thank you to Emily and her amazing team!

TSS Co Founder's Interview: Sakura

1. Where do you currently reside and what do you love most about it?
"I currently reside in Phoenix, Arizona and I love almost everything about it!  I'm originally from Reno, Nevada and decided to come out to Arizona to go to Arizona State University (go Sundevils!). I graduated 2 years ago and decided to stay in Arizona because I love the sunshine and love the people and the energy here!"

2. Describe your closet.
"One word: Simple. I have a lot of solid colored shirts so I can mix up my tops and bottoms with everything and anything.  My one go-to pattern is polkadots... always.  There's nothing wrong with wearing basics just as long as you dress it up with accessories!"

3. What was your favorite part about being in a sorority?
"Oh boy... where do I even start?  Can I say, 'EVERYTHING'? I loved being a part of the exec board and making a difference in my chapter, I love all of the relationships I built with my sisters that are still my best friends to this day, and I loved being surrounded by smart, motivated, young women, that motivated me everyday to be my very best!"

4. What did sorority life teach you that you applied in the real world?
"So much, but the two most important things that I learned was about networking and leadership."

5. What are 5 beauty products you can't live without?
"1. Bedhead Blowdry Serum- it's my favorite voumizer for your hair and it lasts for about 3 whole days!
2. L'Oreal Voluminous Mascara- I've used it since I was in middle school! It really is the best mascara ever
3. Seche Vite Top Coat- Because I love to switch nail polish color often, I like to do my own nails. This topcoat was shared on TSS by a reader and I honestly don't know what I would do without it! It dries up super quick and it makes your nails look like gel!
4. Neutrogena Makeup Remover Wipes- There are nights where I'm just way too lazy to wash my face to get my makeup off so I use this makeup remover wipe to take off my makeup! They're nice and wet, but not too wet and it takes your entire makeup off with one wipe!
5. Laura Mercier Foundation Primer- I am a firm believer that using a primer makes a world of a difference! I've tried out a lot of primers, but this one is by far my favorite!"

6. What do you love most about working on TSS?
"I love everything about working on TSS, but I think what I love most is the fact that I get to be creative in all aspects.  I get to be creative when thinking of posts, designing, connecting sororities to sororities, and so much more!  Another thing that I love about working on TSS is that we are creating a platform to showcase the positivity of Greek life and crush all of those 'stereotypes' of sorority women."

7. What is the best advice you were ever given?
"To always be humble and be nice to others.  This advice is something that I apply to my life every single day."

8. Who's your celebrity style crush?
"Who other than Olivia Palermo & Audrey Hepburn? They have classy & fabulous written all over them!"

9. What are your top 3 stores you like to shop at?
"1. J.Crew, 2. Gap, 3. Madewell.  Oh... Target definitely is another one to add!"

10. What do you like to do on your day off?
"Working on TSS, it's very difficult for me to have a 'day off' because I'm constantly thinking about TSS and work! But on my free time I love to take my puppy, Winston, to the dog park or hang out with friends!  I also love Pinterest because it gets my creative brain going and I get so motivated and inspired!"

11. What else do you do for work?
"I am currently working on a couple different projects and I also am Head of Design for a Mexico based blog called, Estoes Purpura!"

12. What are your interests/passions?

"I absolutely love everything that has to do with graphic design, blogging, and photography- basically being creative!  I also love reading about new businesses and start-ups! "

Throwback Thursday: The Sorority Secrets Video

We thought we would change it up a bit this Thursday and do a little Throw Back Thursday!  It has been roughly 8 months since we released our teaser video and we've gained quite the followers since we launched The Sorority Secrets at the end of January.  By doing a Throwback Thursday, we thought this would be a perfect way to show our new readers and followers who we are, our mission, and why we created The Sorority Secrets.

If you haven't gotten to know us, the Co-Founders, then find out about each one of us here.  It's been quite the journey and it's been amazing to see how much The Sorority Secrets has grown in so little time, but we have SO MUCH MORE for you all in the pipeline.

We want to take this time to thank you all; thank you for sharing your secret, for following us, for helping us spread the news about The Sorority Secrets, and thank you for believing in us.  Our goal is to spread the positivity of sorority women and Greek life; as well as to be the go-to site for ALL women, not just sorority women to be able to share and hear other women's secrets and recommendations.... cause some secrets are meant to be shared!

We love you all and thank you!
