Campus Security 101: 5 Tips To Keep You Safe

Campus safety is something we here at The Sorority Secrets take very seriously. As women, we are often more vulnerable when it comes to being attacked, so it is so important to equip yourself physically and mentally as you walk around campus, being mindful of predators who may attack you at any given moment. We were so happy when Rose from Security Gem shared with us her secrets on staying safe on campus. Below are her 5 tips we would like to share with you on how to keep yourself safe.

CAMPUS SECURITY 101: 5 TIPS TO KEEP YOU SAFE by Rose, Security Gem

College is the land of freedom, experimentation, and friendships and though it may seem a bit like Shangri-La you still need to protect yourself and your friends.  Maybe your mother has beat you over the head with stories of campus crime or perhaps you get reminded via PSAs to use the “buddy system” but that doesn’t mean that everyone in your crew has had the same experience so let’s take a step back and talk about 5 easy steps.

  • Program the following numbers into your phone right now: campus security, campus escort, and finally ICE.  ICE is an acronym that stands for in case of emergency.  This is the first place a rescue service will try to call in case of emergency.  If you live off campus you may want to look into services like Smart 911.  Smart 911 is a free service that allows you to keep your medical records and security information in a secure place online that emergency responders can access if you call 911.  You can upload pictures of yourself, your roomies, and even pets.  You can also add any medications you are taking or health concerns.
  • Use technology.  There is an app for that.  There are a lot of apps for that actually.  BSafe is one personal safety application.  They focus on turning your phone into a GPS based panic button.   Using the app, you can program your phone to automatically notify your family, 911, or your friends of your exact location with the push of a button. It can also be setup to “fake call you” which could be rather handy during a bad first date.  BSafe offers a free basic version of their service or you can pay $20 a year for premium service.  Another popular app is called Watch Over Me.  Watch Over Me allows you to create your own safety rule tied to a specific amount of time.  For example, you might set it before you walk home alone from class at night to call your emergency contact if you don’t check-in within 15 minutes.  Finally, you might want to take a look at OnWatch. Like the other apps OnWatch allows you to preset emergency contacts for a one button dial.  You can connect it to your local 911, campus security, or even a safe list of friends.
  • Demand that your residence hall is safe!  If your school is not using an electronic lock system ask them when your lock was last changed.  I don’t mean a recycled lockset either.  You deserve a brand new lock set that is yours and yours alone.  Check out the facility and look for individual deadbolts and peepholes.  See if there is a place to lock your valuables or invest in a small safe to keep things that are valuable to you.  It is every individual’s right to feel safe in their home!
  • I’m here to remind you to lock the door.  Going to the bathroom?  Lock your door.  Going to your neighbor’s room?  Lock your door.  The #1 way a burglar is going to get into your space is by walking through an unlocked door after they piggy back into a building.  God bless you for being so kind and holding the door for strangers but when it comes to your dorm it has to stop.  It is always better to be safe than polite.  If you feel bad slamming the door on someone you need to put your big girl pants and just do it.  You can’t always be polite in life because when you let a stranger in your home you are not only putting yourself in danger but everyone else too.  Yes I know he is hot but so was one famous killer who doesn’t deserve to be named.  The people breaking into on-campus homes are not obvious criminals.  The people that are breaking into dorms are RAs, football players, basketball players, cross country team members, and indy musicians.
  • Trust your gut.  As women we are so programmed to be nice to others but you also have to be nice to yourself.  If you are in an elevator and a stranger joins you it is okay to step off the elevator.  If someone asks you for help it’s okay to reciprocate by finding a security officer or calling for help.  If someone knocks on your door it’s okay to let them know you are there but not accepting visitors.  If your girlfriend wants to stay at a club to hang out with strangers, it’s okay to force her to leave with you.  All of these situations are uncomfortable but when you push through the discomfort you will be stronger and fierce.  You will become the kind of woman we need in this world.  It’s better to be safe than polite.

Airbrush Legs

Airbrush Legs: Sally Hansen

Before it gets too cold outside, and we're still wearing our dresses and short shorts, we had to reveal one of our favorite reader's secrets... Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs!  This one comes from Jaclyn, an Alpha Chi Omega alumni from Arizona State.  According to Jaclyn, this magical lotion gives you "Barbie legs".  Tried, tested, and TSS approved: this stuff is the real deal!

Whether your summer tan is fading, you have a bit of razor burn, or a less than pretty bruise, this stuff makes it all vanish away.  Essentially makeup for your legs, it covers everything up... leaving flawless & even toned skin.  It's also waterproof, so a little wear won't take it off.  We actually had to use soap and water in the shower to get it off; it really has staying power!  A little fun fact, TSS Co-Founder Ali just brought this stuff with her to a bachelorette party in Las Vegas last weekend... it was a hit before all the girls headed out for a night on the town!

Our tips for a flawless application: start with clean, freshly shaved legs.  Apply the lotion about 10-15 minutes before getting dressed, so it has a chance to fully dry.  Rub into legs like any other lotion, making sure to blend in any harsh edges.  Wash hands immediately after applying, using soap and warm water.  We prefer the lotion version (it also comes in a spray formula) for easy application.  After enjoying your flawless legs, rinse off in the shower with soap and warm water.

This product is truly a winner.  We hope you love our reader's secret for perfectly fabulous, airbrushed legs!

Rabbit Juice

Ok, so no, this is not actually rabbit juice, but one of our reader's, Ursulline, created a pretty fabulous healthy juice drink that she named "Rabbit Juice" because it is infused with lots of vegetables, specifically carrots! So what is juicing you might be wondering? According to Ursulline, "Juicing is the quickest way for the enzymes to absorb in your body". We have always wondered what the benefit is over juicing rather than just using a regular blender and Ursulline explained that, "The enzymes go to work a lot faster and break down any toxins in your body because they are live organisms as opposed to blending which still has amazing benefits, but not with the same intensity".  Do you love juicing too? If so, then you will totally love this recipe she created as a part of her healthy drink regimen.

You will need these ingredients to make "Rabbit Juice":

  • Chia seeds
  • Ginger root (1 inch)
  • Large carrots (qty 4)
  • 1/2 of a beet
  • 1 orange
  • 1/2 of a green apple
  • Ground cinnamon (as desired amount)
Simply place all of these ingredients inside your juicer, one at a time, to make the Rabbit Juice drink. The best juicer that Ursulline recommends is the Omega 8006 Juicer! Keep in mind that beets have a very strong color to them so your drink will have a dark reddish-purple look when complete.

Do you have an awesome juicing recipe? We want to try it so please email your recipes to secret@thesororitysecrets.com!

Sweet Greek Treat

Ok, so if you don't know already, we each have a serious sweet tooth! Justifying eating a dozen cookies in one sitting really is not the healthiest choice, so we were so glad we discovered a better alternative from one of our readers, Ashley. Ashley discovered a delicious yogurt that we can't wait to try called Greek Gods Traditional Greek Yogurt. So, what is so special about this yogurt you're probably thinking? "You can't stop eating it!" Ashley explained. This yogurt comes in so many flavors but Ashley is obsessed with the honey flavored yogurt. This yogurt flavor can be eaten a million ways than one. It's good with apples, strawberries, or peanut butter. Ashley even suggested freezing it and eating it like ice cream {yum!}. Best of all, this yogurt flavor is 250 calories--the perfect snack! Try the Greek Gods Traditional Greek Yogurt and let us know what you think!

Reader's Secret: Silk Stain Removal

One of our readers, Allison in New York City, shared an amazing secret with us that we wanted to share with those of you who struggle with deodorant stains on silk material. We don't know about you, but whenever we wear silk we are always cautious of every little move we make because one stain automatically warrants an expensive trip to the dry cleaners (yikes!). "Getting something on silk-deodorant, makeup, dirt-is no fun" Allison explained. We couldn't agree more. So what's her secret stain removal regimen: Nylon.

According to Allison, "Just rub the area and voilà, the spot disappears". Well, we took a pair of our nylon pantyhose and did just that on a deodorant stain, and she was right! While nylon does not get rid of all silk stains, this was such a quick, simple, and affordable way to clean up a silk stain deodorant mess. Thanks for sharing Allison!

Spring Polish Picks

Spring is right around the corner, and our nails are ready!  We are loving these creamy pastel shades for nails, and picked our two favorite spring colors to share with you.  Mint (such as our selection from Essie) is one spring trend that we can't wait to start wearing.  And, you can't go wrong with a pastel pink, as seen in our pick from OPI.  If you're a nail painting DIY kind of girl (which we sure are) these white-based shades can be a little trickier to apply.  Slow and steady does it, and keep in mind that 2-3 coats are usually needed for these shades.  Generously apply top coat (we applied 2 coats!) to up the shine factor on cream colors.

Speaking of top coat, thank you Cristina (Arizona State alumni) for sending in a reader's secret about Seche Vite top coat!  It's our favorite top coat too; our co-founder, Ali, swears by it.  Seche Vite dries in 5-10 minutes flat, which is pretty impressive.  Cristina added, "it also leaves a really glossy finish very similar to gel nail polish."  We agree!

What nail color are you excited to wear this spring?  Share your favorite colors below, we would love to discover some new nail polishes!
